Algeria and Malaysia have maintained secular relationships but their formal diplomatic ties were established few years ago: Algeria has opened the Chancellery on 1993 and Malaysia started its Embassy in Algiers on 2001.
The state of political relations between the two countries is excellent, both nations, members of the NAM and the OIC organization as well as the G15 and the G77, share similar views on many issues at the international level; maintain a good cooperation and consultations in forums and international conferences, particularly at the UNO where both play a significant role.
Malaysia has, during the period of terrorism faced by Algeria , adopted positive position in defending these of moderate and tolerant Islam.

The Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has visited Malaysia twice, in participating to the NAM and OIC Summits which were held in Kuala Lumpur on 2003.
The former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, accompanied with an important delegation, has made an historical official visit to Algeria on august 2003 during which several agreements were signed concerning bilateral trade, cooperation between news agencies and the area of Public Works.
- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the present Prime Minister, on April 1994, when he was in charge of portfolio of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
- Datuk Seri Hamid Albar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, on January 2000, during which the agreement, between Algeria and Malaysia , of promotion and protection of investment was signed.
- Delegation of Malaysian Experts (EPU) to Algerian for the audit of the Algerian economy (29 September to 8 October 2000 ).
- Malaysia has participated at the International Fair of Algiers (Jun 2000).
- Moreover, the Malaysian Deputy Minister of Tourism has made on 2004 a visit to Algeria to study the possibilities of cooperation.
- Mister Salah Dembri, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria (May 1995), during that visit the agreement of cooperation and the agreement of partial suppression of visa between two countries were signed.
- Mister Hamid Temmar, former Minister of participation and coordination of reforms (23/25 November 2000), Mister Temmar has visited, again, Malaysia as Minister of Trade heading Algerian delegation multi – sectors based ( 25 to 30 march, 2003).
- Mister Abdelaziz Belkhadem, Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria on 2002.
- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mister Ahmed Amine Kherbi, on 2002.
- Mister Amar Ghoul, Minister of Publics Works, on 2003, heading Algerian delegation multi-sectors based.
Economic Cooperation:
The Algerian and Malaysian authorities have expressed their respective will to enhance the ties of cooperation existing between the two countries which have enormous potentialities to exploit.
Some Malaysian companies are interested to take stakes in the several projects scheduled in Algeria in the areas of construction of houses unit, infrastructures of public’s works and in the habilitation of water. The Malaysian Company of Oil and Gas, PETRONAS, maintain relations with its Algerian counterpart SONATRACH.
Cultural and Technical Relations:
Malaysia continues to benefit Algeria with its Program of cooperation MTCP and numerous of Algerian Students are studying in different Universities of Malaysia. The authorities of both countries had expressed their wish for to enhance their ties in the area of culture.
Bilateral Trade:
Malaysia – Algeria trade performance was in total for the period between January to November 2004, 331, 6 RM millions or 87, 2 US $ (Exports by Malaysia 331 RM millions and importations from Algeria 05 RM millions). In 2003, the volume of exchange between the two countries was in total 292, 1 RM millions or 76, 9 US $ (Malaysian exportations 285, 9 RM millions and importations 6, 2 RM millions).
